Pinned toot

Hi, some questions for the community:

1) should we stick to let people join by invitation only or let everyone join?

2) if we limit who can join, who should it be limited to?

3) shall we enable federation so that we can follow users on other mastodons and vice versa?

4) what is your main interest in using this platform?

Thank you
Frank

Hi all,
Instance has been updated to 2.5.
Let me know if you run in to any problems or come across things that no longer work.
(yes the tweet+toot button is gone since it was not migrated. If I decide to reinstate it it will be done properly and not just as a quick hack).

Hi all,
Just a warning that I will take down the instance to upgrade to the latest version of mastodon and move it to a different server.
Not sure when exactly this is going to happen, but since the local timeline is pretty quiet anyway I suspect the downtime won't upset many users:)

I love when my code actually has unit tests, and I make a change, and the test breaks, then when I fix it, it alerts me to a potential regression so I can catch that too. Sometimes I have (make) the time to write good code.

The great thing about technology these days is that you can install computers on the other side of the world.

The crap thing about technology these days is that sometimes you have to install computers 10 time zones away in the middle of the night.

#introduction

I write spatial analysis (#GIS) software, primarily for water research in California, at Center for Watershed Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Projects are anything from building databases, writing analysis pipelines, statistical models, web applications, and decision support tools. I also teach GIS on Coursera, and do a variety of side projects, often in environmental action.

Hey @quokka
could you boost this to your users?

I am working on a bot that allows mastodon users to subscribe to daily weather forecasts for the cities they live in.

Twice a day (user's evening and morning) a toot with a 2hr (or so) forecast will be send.

Forecast toots will honor the visibility setting of the subscription.

I would be keen to know if people may be interested in using such a free service?

Specific features all up for discussion.

Registration to this instance is now open for all.

Hi, anybody interested playing a game of on mastodon?
Let me know and I set something up. Inviting users on scicomm.xyz too, @quokka
The game host will present 3 science related facts or news items and the players have to identify the one fiction item - and they have to explain their reasons why they think each item is science or fiction. The host will then reveal what's real and what not and give some background info on each item.
